Two undergrads found hanging in their hostels at Peradeniya and SJU

Police are probing the mysterious deaths of two undergraduates from the North who had been found hanging by their necks in their respective hostels at two different universities yesterday, police said. One body was found from the Katuwawala men’s hostel of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura. The dead youth was a 24-year-old arts student of the university. He was from Kayts, Jaffna the police said.

The body was found by his mates living in the hostel who alerted the warden. Police said that they conducted preliminary investigations and recording of statements from 64 other undergraduates living in the same hostel was in progress.

The other body was found in the bathroom of a men’s hostel of the Peradeniya University. The dead student has been identified as 22-year-old undergraduate of the Engineering Faculty. He is a resident of Kodikamam, Jaffna, police said.

His family members had arrived at the Peradeniya campus on Friday evening to identify the body. His father told the Sunday Island that his son had been a very active and bright student and he didn’t know of any reason that could have led to suicide.Police said that investigations have not yet established motives for these two deaths and their investigations were in progress.
