President: Raigam Tele Awards left out ‘best soap opera’

President Ranil Wickremesinghe on Saturday said that parliament was the best teledrama in the country and that too should have been given an award at the Raigam Tele’es 2023 award ceremony.

Speaking at the 20th Raigam Tele’es ceremony at Shangri-La Colombo, President Wickremesinghe said that the organisers of the event had overlooked Parliament, the best teledrama. “It has been on for nearly three years now on almost all TV channels. It is the most-viewed drama, which is telecast eight days a month. There are many features including verbal battles and actions. This is the best teledrama this country has been viewing for the past three years.

The President thanked Chairman Raigam Group of Companies Ravi Liyanage for having held the award ceremony for the past 20 years.

“Time was when we watched movies from MGM and Warner Bros. Today, that place has been taken over by Netflix and Amazon. The mobile phones, laptops and iPads have reduced the difference between cinema and television,” the President said.
