Justice Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe told Parliament yesterday that legal action would be instituted against social activist Sepala Amarasinghe, who is alleged to have insulted the sacred tooth relic at Dalada Maligawa calling it a ‘Labba’.
Minister Rajapakshe said so in response to concerns raised by some MPs demanding action against Amarasinghe.Minister Rajapakshe: “Amarasinghe has been identified as a radical free thinker who does not follow any religion. It is his right to follow a religion or not. However, he does not have the right to insult the beliefs of those who follow a religion. Therefore, we will take legal action against this person.”
MP Wimal Weerawasna said Amarasinghe had been insulting Buddhism via social media several times. “Amarasinghe is a radical thinker. He insults those who follow Buddhism. He had called the sacred tooth relic a ’Labba’. This kind of behaviour cannot be allowed,” he said.
