EC has taken all steps to hold LC elections, Counsel informs SC
The Elections Commission yesterday informed the Supreme Court that it had taken all necessary steps to hold the Local Council election as stipulated by law.President’s Counsel Saliya Pieris, appearing for the Election Commission, said so when a writ petition, filed by retired Army Colonel, named W. M. R. Wijesundara, asking the Supreme Court to issue an injunction against holding the local government elections, was taken up.
The case is being heard before a three-judge-bench of the Supreme Court, headed by Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya. Justices S. Thurairaja and Janak de Silva are the other members of the bench.
Bar Association President Saliya Peiris, PC, told the Court that the Attorney General had informed the Election Commission that the AG would not represent it.Thus, the members of the Commission had retained his services, Peiris said.Wijesundara, who seeks an injunction against the election says that an election should not be held when there is a big economic crisis in the country.
