Kelaniya Uni tense as protesting undergrads occupy main administrative building

A group of undergraduates yesterday (30) stormed the main administrative building of the Kelaniya University in protest against police attacks on them.

On Monday night students demonstrated opposite the university against an invitation the university administration had extended to President Ranil Wickremesinghe to open a new administrative building at the Faculty of Graduate Studies. Wickremesinghe was expected to arrive there for the event today (31).

Students have said they won’t allow universities to be used for political propaganda.

Police used water cannon and tear gas to disperse the students.

However, the protests were still on at the time of going to press.

Head of the Kelaniya University Students Union Galwewa Siri Sumeda Thera said that due to the expected arrival of the President, police and the Army had barred students from entering the premises of the Faculty of Graduate Studies.
