Azath Salley quits CMC to contest the upcoming PC polls

Azath Salley, an opposition member of the Colombo Municipal Council, has resigned from his membership to contest the upcoming PC polls from the Eastern province.

He is planning to contest as an independent candidate.

According to a spokesman of Salley, the former municipal council member’s plan to contest the upcoming PC polls as an independent candidate is aimed at showing the strength of the Muslim community in the province.

According to him, Salley was prompted to do this, as the main Muslim political parties have sided with the major parties to contest the upcoming election.

Salley in a media release issued yesterday said; the approach of the Muslim parties will not help show the world the strength the Muslim community has in the Eastern province, which according to him represents 42% of the region’s population.

Salley is expected to lead an independent group to contest the upcoming PC polls covering all three districts of the province.

Salley represented the ruling UPFA in the Colombo Muncipal Council which was the main opposition party of the council.
