Workers at Negombo MC protest against UNP proposal

Aug 8, 2012 12:28:16 PM - itnnews.lk

Labourers are protesting against the United National Party resolution to evict casual workers of the Negombo Municipal Council.

Former Opposition Leader of the United National Party group of the Negombo Municipal Council has proposed to evict the 110 workers deployed as casual labourers. They are serving in the Health Projects launched by the Municipal Council. Casual labourers staged a protest against this UNP Resolution.
Meanwhile Negombo Mayor Anthony Jayaweera has pointed out that he would leave no room for the implementation of such a proposal submitted to the Council to achieve parochial political aims.
He said that these workers are discharging a valuable service. If they are dismissed it will paralyse the programmes launched by his Council. Jobs of 100 families will be lost. As such he pointed out that he was not prepared to implement this proposal or paralyse the work they have already launched.
