Pont Pedro fisheries harbour vested in the public
The Pont Pedro fisheries harbour has been vested in the public after 27 years.
Bans had been imposed since May 1985 on the activities of the Point Pedro fisheries harbour that benefited ten thousand fisheries families in the Jaffna Peninsula, due to terrorist activities. The Point Pedro fisheries harbour which was captured by the terrorists in 1990 was released by the security forces in 1996. The harbour which was fully renovated was vested in the public under the patronage of Minister Douglas Devananda and Jaffna Commander Major General Mahinda Haturusinghe. The government has provided facilities to the people to engage in fisheries activities using this harbour. Commander of the 52nd division Brig. Anura Sudasinghe, Commander of the 521st brigade Col. Tikiri Dissanayake and Divisional Secretary J. Jayaseelan were amongst a large number of people who participated in the occasion.
