Muslims celebrate Ramazan festival
Sri Lankan Muslim devotees joined their brethren throughout the world in celebrating Ramazan on a grand scale.
The Muslims all over the world observed a one month long fast with the aim of understanding the needs of the poor and generously providing for their necessities. The fast came to an end last night with the sighting of the new moon. A number of countries in the world reported sighting the new moon last night. Following the announcement made by the grand mosque in Colombo last night that the new moon was sighted, the Sri Lankan Muslims made preparations to celebrate the Ramazan festival today. The Preparations were reported from a number of areas.
The Ramazan prayers were conducted at the Davatagaha Mosque under the patronage of Moulavi Asseiyyid Alavi Moulana. A large number of Muslims attended the prayers. A Ramazan celebration was organized at the Galle Face green. Muslim clergy and foreign diplomats were amongst a large number of people who participated. A special prayer was held at the Segu Isadeen stadium in Eragama, Ampara. Thousands of Muslims attended the prayers.
Ramazan festival in the Batticaloa district was held at the Eravur stadium. A notable feature was the participation of Tamils along with the Muslims.
A Ramazan festival was held at the security forces headquarters in Welikande, Polonnaruwa. Muslim religious leaders representing Batticaloa, Ampara, Trincomalee and Polonnaruwa districts participated in the occasion.
The Muslims who gathered in the Gongawila mosque in Matale celebrated the Ramazan festival on a grand scale. The prayers were conducted by Moulavi Muneer.
