Court issues Order preventing demonstrators from obstructing highways
The Colombo Magistrate’s Court has issued an order banning the holding of demonstrations opposite the Colombo Fort Railway Station putting the public into difficulty or obstructing the highway. Police Media Spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana said that the law will be enforced to the letter against those who breach the order.
The Police Media Spokesman said that continuous demonstrations had been staged in the past opposite the Colombo Fort Railway Station and obstructing the day to day activities of hundreds of thousands of people frequenting the area.
The Police received information that the Inter University Students Federation was planning to hold a demonstration opposite the Station today. He said that accordingly they took action to report to the Colombo Fort Magistrate, who issued an order that there should be no obstructions to the movement of traffic or the passengers arriving at the Station, during any demonstration.
The Police Media Spokesman pointed out that they were always prepared to extend maximum support to any peaceful demonstration and that they cannot permit violent agitations. He added that they are bound to ensure the security of the public.
