Renowned actress Sabeetha Perera and her husband DP Jayasinghe Piling Co Ltd Chairman Upali Jayasinghe embarked on a noble cause in providing the funds to cover the total financial cost to provide a house to Jayawadani, a former LTTE carder. Amidst religious formalities the house, which was built in Kilinochchi, was ceremonially presented to Jayawadani and her family in the presence of Perera, Jayasinghe, Major General Sudantha Ranasinghe, Commander of the Kilinochchi Security Force and other distinguished guests.
The donation of the land and the construction of the house were done by the Sri Lanka Army under the guidance of Major General Ranasinghe, while the total cost of the project, which amounted to 1.2 million rupees was entirely provided by Perera and Jayasinghe.
A documentary film based on her experiences as an LTTE carder during the last stages of the humanitarian mission was what exposed Jayawadani’s moving story to the world. Named ‘The Last Phase’, the film contributed immensely in conveying the truth to the world regarding the efforts taken by Sri Lankan forces to free the country from terrorism. Thus, Jayawadani taking the lead role of the movie helped in exposing the truth about the war situation in Sri Lanka.
“Out of all the social welfare projects that we have engaged in, this one is special to us because myself and Upali firmly believe that we did something for a person who has done immense service to our country. She helped to expose the truth to the world. And it is our duty to give something back to her in return,” said Perera commenting on the noble cause.
Further explaining what paved the way for them to be a part of the project; she said that it is at a screening of the movie that Jayasinghe came to learn of Jayawadani. “At the screening Secretary to the Ministry of Defence and Urban Development Gotabaya Rajapaksa and other army officials had been discussing ways to help her and recognise what she did for the country. It was there that the suggestion was made to donate the house and my husband agreed to donate the necessary funds for the project,” she added. Soon after, a donation was made to Ioma Rajapaksa, Chairperson of the Seva Vanitha Unit of the Ministry of Defence and Urban Development to commence the building of the house.
This worthy cause is a step forward in enabling Jayawadani, her husband and her four children to look forward to a prosperous future and a happy life.
