Deputy Minister Sarath Gunaratna talks of a ‘Godfather’
The Deputy Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Sarath Kumara Gunaratna, in an interview with a weekend newspaper, has spoken regarding nefarious activities that are being committed in Negombo area.
“This has been going on for a long time. I have informed the relevant authorities with reports. But I can’t understand why nothing is being done about it. People say nothing is being done due to influence from powerful people. Everyone in Negombo oppose these activities. However, people are silent as they fear. There is one place which is like a fortress of the henchmen of the politician. Some call him ‘Godfather’.
I have informed top men of the party and security sections. The CID and the special police unit should take action. What is needed is not to arrest small fry. People fear that certain individuals have support from the political hierarchy. They mention names of those we respect. The police too fear these people. Certain politicians have become multi billionaires. Those who came in bicycles have become billionaires. This is not limited to Negombo. The same environment exists everywhere in the country. I have to tell these things now. If I don’t, I would be accused.
If things are allowed to go on like this Negombo would be a city of heroin. Many complain to us regarding this menace. It is not difficult to take action regarding the menace. If this is allowed to continue the whole young generation would be spoilt. Negombo was known as ‘Little Rome’. People would take to the streets before long. What would happen if the city of catholic is allowed to be destroyed?”
