Government intensifies Violence targeting JVP
The media unit of the JVP has issued a communique stating that the government has intensified its terror campaign targeting the JVP and its supporters.
The communique in full:
Violence carried out by the ruling party against the JVP during the Uva election campaign is escalating day by day. A large number of election offices the JVP had put up have been destroyed. At Badalkumbura a stage being decorated for a meeting to be addressed by the Leader of the JVP Anura Dissanayaka was set on fire by government thugs and JVP Members who were decorating the stage and the surrounding were assaulted and shot at.
Certain election offices have been attacked a second or a third time by gangs of thugs maintained by the government. They use Defender vehicles - types used by security forces and VIP security sections and firearms - to infuse terror in the area. Several incidents that are a part of government’s terror campaign were carried out today (30th) morning.
They are:
1. The election office at the residence of Comrade P.P. Wijesiri in Monaragala town was attacked for the third time.
2. The election office at Halmillara at Buttala was attacked for the second time.
3. The election office at the Burutha Junction at Buttala has been destroyed and property taken away.
4. The election office at the residence of Comrade Anura Kumara at Dambagalla Junction at Madulla was attacked for the second time.
Complaints 5/12 BEICB & 7/13 ECIB regarding several of the above incidents have been lodged at Buttala Police.
