Housing Complex for Government Servants in Borella
A housing complex for government servants is to be constructed under the guidance and direction of Secretary Defence and Urban Development Gotabaya Rajapaksa fulfilling a maiden pledge given in the Mahinda Chinthana Manifesto of providing shelter to all families.
The foundation laying ceremony of the proposed housing scheme was held with the participation of Secretary Defence and Urban Development Gotabaya Rajapaksa on Thursday (30th October) in Borella, Colombo.
The 21 storied apartment complex to be built in a 2.5 acre block of land will include 608 housing units under two categories. The 650sq ft two bedroom unit will cost Rs. 7.7 million while the 3 bedroom, 800 sq ft unit will cost Rs. 8.9 million. Each unit will include a kitchen, living area and modern sanitary facilities. In addition the floors will be fully tiled. The total cost of the project is estimated to be Rs.4,499 million.
Speaking at the event Gotabaya Rajapaksa said this project is being implemented as a measure to address the burning issue of housing for state sector employees from out stations serving in Colombo. And the project aims at providing housing solutions for beneficiaries at affordable prices, he said.
He noted that even though there are such housing schemes built by the private sector but are out of the reach of the average state sector employee therefore it is expected to provide high quality modern houses at affordable price ranges.
Professionals who have completed 10 years of government service and officials with not less than 15 years of service and do not possess a house of their own are eligible for obtaining a house.
Additional Secretary (Defence) of the MOD&UD S Hettiarachchi, Former Commander of the Navy Admiral Jayanath Colombage, Chairman of the UDA Nimal Perera, Director General Harshan De Silva, Additional Director General Brigadier Samantha Jayasuriya, Director of the Urban Regeneration Programme Brigadier Ranjith Samarasinghe, UDA official sand a large number of professionals and state officials were present at the occasion.
