The Sri Lanka operations of GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) won four National Business Excellence Awards (NBEAs) including the award for the overall runner-up among all awards recipients at the 2014 edition of this prestigious annual awards event.
GSK’s rich haul of two Gold and two Silver awards affirmed the company’s commitment to sustained business excellence and its contributions to the economic progress of the country.
GSK won the Gold award for Excellence in Corporate Governance, the Gold in the Healthcare and Related Services sector, the Silver in the Extra Large category across all sectors and the Silver in the Overall Winners group, in its first participation in the awards program conducted and presented by the National Chamber of Commerce of Sri Lanka (NCCSL) for the 11th successive year.
“We are delighted at our strong showing at these awards, which are based on a stringent evaluation by an eminent independent panel of judges, of more than 80 aspects in seven areas of business excellence,” said Managing Director of GSK Pharmaceuticals in Sri Lanka, Stuart Chapman. “Participating was in itself a rewarding experience and yielded many valuable lessons and to win four in our first attempt is indeed a noteworthy achievement.”
Winners of National Business Excellence Awards are assessed under a spectrum of multi-dimensional criteria that includes Excellence in Leadership, Excellence in Corporate Governance, Excellence in Capacity Building, Excellence in Performance Management, Excellence in Local and Global Market Reach, Excellence in Corporate Social Responsibility and Environmental Sustainability and Excellence in Business and Financial Results.
“We particularly value being adjudged the best for Corporate Governance because business excellence is not simply a matter of doing well but doing things right,” Chapman added. “Receiving the Silver as an overall winner among companies in 27 sectors of business is also an accolade that will greatly encourage the entire GSK team.”
One of the world’s leading research-based pharmaceutical, consumer health and vaccines companies, GSK is committed to improving the quality of human life by enabling people to do more, feel better and live longer. GSK and its predecessors have been doing business in Sri Lanka since the late 1930s. GSK is the first and only multinational company to manufacture pharmaceuticals in Sri Lanka.
