Reservoirs under the Department of Irrigation only has water for the current cultivation season, Sudarshani Widanapathirana, Chief Irrigation Engineer of the Department of Irrigation, told the media yesterday.

“We have just enough water for this farming season. Luckily for us, we only have to release water twice or thrice for most farming areas,” she said.

However, there were reports that farmers who used rainwater and water from tanks that were not under the Department of Irrigation were facing serious problems due to lack of water, she said.

The Met Department said it expected heavy rains in October and November this year.
