204,002 Mahaweli settlers to receive free hold land deeds
The Sri Lanka Mahaweli Authority has outlined plans to grant a total of 204,002 Mahaweli settlers with freehold land deeds, of which 20,178 deeds will be distributed by the end of May.
The figures were announced during a ceremony held at Polonnaruwa Royal Central College on Saturday (04) morning to hand over freehold land deeds to Mahaweli settlers of zones B, C, Madirigiriya, and Moragahakanda in the Polonnaruwa District as part of the “Urumaya” program
In a symbolic gesture, President Ranil Wickremesinghe who attended the event, personally handed out deeds to 30 individuals. A total of 1340 free hold land deeds were handed over at the event.
Addressing the gathering, the President explained that those present, who entered the hall as licensees, would leave as landowners, as their land would become freehold that day. The president also emphasized the importance of land ownership in society and the significance of this change.
He urged the people to actively participate in building the economy in collaboration with the government’s agricultural modernization program, highlighting the potential for Polonnaruwa to become a key export district in the country
